Armsmear: A Unique Community for Senior Women

Elizabeth H. Colt, a foresighted philanthropist, left her home and much of her estate to provide a residence and support  for  senior women in Hartford and surrounding areas of Connecticut. The center  of our community is the former Colt Mansion, known as  Armsmear, a historic landmark in the heart of Hartford, which has been open to women since 1911. Armsmear is a very diverse community. We welcome single senior women, of limited income, to apply for admission.

About Us

Armsmear is governed by The Trustees of the Colt Bequest. Like our founder Elizabeth Hart Jarvis Colt, we believe that women of a certain age with limited resources should have a safe and comfortable place to live. We are dedicated to preserving and maintaining the dignity, self-worth, safety, and well-being of those living within the Armsmear community.
